Dermatology is the science concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair and nails.

Your skin is the largest and most visible organ of your entire body. It serves as a means of protection for your body acting as a barrier to bacteria and injury. It is also a reflection of the inner health and function of your body. Be good to your skin, it works hard for you everyday of your life! Let Doctor Cumber show you how.

All adults should have a yearly complete Dermatology skin examination to detect skin cancers and pre skin cancerous conditions. This is especially true because of the beautiful, sunny Houston area where we live.

Preventing Skin Cancer:

Doctor Cumber recommends that everyone living in Houston take the following precautions to reduce their risk of skin cancer:

Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you are going to be outside, even if the weather is overcast or cloudy

Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Apply roughly 1 ounce of sunscreen prior to going outside in the daytime and reapply every 2 hours.

Always wear sunglasses when outside during the day.

Wear a broad-brimmed hat and clothing with tightly woven fabric when outside during the daytime.

Identifying Non Melanoma Skin Cancer:

Nonmelanoma skin cancer and actinic keratosis often appear as a change in the skin.

Not all changes in the skin are a sign of nonmelanoma skin cancer or actinic keratosis, but a doctor should be consulted if changes in the skin are seen.

Possible signs of nonmelanoma skin cancer include the following:

  • A sore that does not heal.
  • Areas of the skin that are:
    • Small, raised, smooth, shiny, and waxy.
    • Small, raised, and red or reddish-brown.
    • Flat, rough, red or brown, and scaly.
    • Scaly, bleeding, or crusty.
    • Similar to a scar and firm.

Possible signs of actinic keratosis include the following:

  • A rough, red, pink, or brown, raised, scaly patch on the skin.
  • Cracking or peeling of the lower lip that is not helped by lip balm or petroleum jelly.
